Notable Women in Food (May 16, 2013)
On this installment of It’s More Than Food, Michel Nischan talks with Karen Washington, Maria Hines, and Dorothy Hamilton- all advocates for women within the realm of food. Karen Washington is a community activist and co-founder of Black Urban Growers. As a community gardener and board member of the New York Botanical Gardens, Karen has worked with Bronx neighborhoods to turn empty lots into community gardens. Maria Hines is the owner and chef of Tilth, Golden Beetle, and Agrodolce in Seattle, and an supporter of local farms and sustainable practices. Dorothy Hamilton is the founder and CEO of the International Culinary Center, a culinary institute with campuses in New York, California, and Italy, where students learn all ranges of culinary technique. In this episode, we explore the backgrounds of each of these renowned members of the food industry, and the history behind women in the food movement. Each guest also gives us a current update on their work: Karen expresses her desire to sit down with the community and create a healthier food system for the city, Maria aims to build a society aware of healthy, sustainable foods, and Dorothy talks about teaching her students about building a restaurant that is focused on being on responsible, sourcing locally, and supporting the mid-size farm movement. Genetic Modification in Food (Apr. 11, 2013)
On this installment of It’s More Than Food, Michel Nischan is talking genetically-modified crops with Scott Faber and Fred Kaufman. Scott Faber leads a team working to improve food and farm legislation, chemicals policy and a host of other issues important to EWG and its supporters. Prior to joining EWG, Scott was vice president for federal affairs for the Grocery Manufacturers Association, where he spearheaded efforts to enact the Food Safety Modernization Act, which sets new food safety standards for food manufacturers and farmers. From 2000 to 2007, he was a food and farm policy campaign manager for the Environmental Defense Fund, leading efforts to reform farm policies in the 2002 and 2008 farm bills. From 1993 to 2000, Scott was a senior director for public policy for American Rivers. A native of Massachusetts, Scott holds a J.D. From Georgetown University Law Center and lives in Washington, D.C. Frederick Kaufman, author of Bet the Farm: How Food Stopped Being, has discussed food policy on NBC and MSNBC, Fox Business News, Bloomberg TV, C-SPAN, National Public Radio, and the BBC World Service. A contributing editor at Harper’s Magazine, Kaufman’s work has also appeared in Scientific American, Nature, Popular Science, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, The New Yorker, Foreign Policy, Gourmet, Saveur, Slate, and Wired. He is Professor of English and Journalism at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, and has spoken at the American Museum of Natural History, the New York Public Library, Yale Sustainable Food, Harvard Law School, and the General Assembly of the United Nations. School Food: Healthy Food for America’s Children (Mar. 14, 2013)
Lunch programs in the public school system is a serious issue faced by families across the United States. On this months’s episode of It’s More Than Food, host Michel Nischan speaks with industry leaders who are revolutionizing the food model that currently exists in the education system. Toni Liquori, the Executive Director of School Food FOCUS, Kirsten Toby, co-founder of Revolution Foods, and Bill Telepan, Executive Chef of Wellness in the Schools come together in a discussion about the food model that currently exists in the public school system and the ways in which they are changing this model to one that is sustainable, scalable, and nutritional. Revolution Foods has served more than 50 million fresh and healthy meals across the country to date, Wellness in the Schools creates programs that provide healthy eating and environmental awareness, and School Food Focus is transforming food systems to support student nutrition. These organizations are combating the poor foods in school districts with healthy, nutritional, and replicable food models to provide real food for kids and to help them to develop an understanding of good eating. A Place at the Table: Food Access in America (Feb. 14, 2013)
Food insecurity, obesity, diabetes, hunger, and federal food assistance- these are the topics of the day on It’s More Than Food. In the debut episode, host Michel Nischan is talking with two guests about food access. Lori Silverbush is the Co-director of the A Place at the Table, a film that highlights hunger’s economic, social, and cultural implications for our nation. Janet Poppendieck is a Professor of Sociology at Hunter College, and the author of Free for All: Fixing School Food in America and Bread Lines Knee Deep in Wheat. Find out about the cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Why so many Americans view SNAP participants as ‘welfare queens’, and how do negative opinions of low-income people feed the problem of food insecurity.
